Stock photography is a huge business. You can easily operate your own business from home as the stock photographer or you can hire an agency to sell your work and still maintain a business from your home. Your images can be sold for greeting cards, gifts, products, magazines, posters, prints, and book covers to name just a few. There are a number of books on the market that list potential clients interested in purchasing stock photography. Go to your local library, seek out the reference librarian and tell him or her that you are looking for a list of photography buyers. You will find a number of choices - try to be selective.
The need for good photography in our society is in great demand. Stock photography allows greater financial freedom for the end user. He or she saves money by purchasing a stock image instead of sending a photographer out to shoot a specific shot. The stock photographer has a special role for the advertising agency, magazine editor and graphic designer.
Stock photography images hold the same usage rights as advertising photography. Stock photography is much more reasonably priced in comparison to a contracted or assignment photographer and they can be sold time and time again. Depending on the contract you have with a buyer, they can be used at the same time. Some buyers prefer to hold exclusive rights for a specific time a privilege for which they will pay extra. See "Copyrights" for more information.
A successful stock photographer can travel all over the world doing what he or she loves best, taking pictures and getting paid for it.
